Deerfield Families, I'm reaching out this morning to share a few updates with you. I want to explain one important change we are making in this 4th grading period. This is a time in which traditional letter grades don't honor the realities facing our teachers, students, and families. We're staying focused on teaching and learning. We've developed a simple progress report that will hopefully communicate the academic strengths and areas in need of practice for each of our students. Families, we will be sharing out these progress reports weekly. You will be able to find your child's report in Google Classroom beginning this Friday, April 17. The report will be updated each Friday through the end of the school year. You can find more detail and a full update on our school website. https://des.rc.k12.in.us/article/221671?org=deerfield-elementary-school Please take care, and remember you can email your child's teacher if you are in need of help with lessons. Sincerely, Mrs. Kile

Deerfield Families, Our schools have been continuing to work with local health officials and prepare for the possibility of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in our schools. To date, we are still not aware of any cases identified in our local community. However, it is critical that we take actions to raise awareness and prevent the spread of illness. With this priority in mind, I have decided to cancel tomorrow’s Pastries for Parents event at Deerfield. This is in accordance with the recommendation to avoid large public gatherings that could provide opportunity for illness to spread. While I know we will have disappointed students and families, I firmly believe this is in everyone’s best interest as we consider the safety of everyone in our school and larger community. The PTO will still provide donuts, fruit, and milk for students in our classrooms tomorrow morning. This treat, however, will not be open to families and guests. Thank you for your continuing patience and support as we all work through this together. Sincerely, Mrs. Laura Kile

Great things are happening at Deerfield every day. Sometimes these successes are quiet moments in classrooms that are only witnessed by our students and teachers. Sometimes, however, these successes come in the form of very public achievements and honors. We are so very proud to announce that Deerfield Elementary School was recently recognized as a 2018-2019 Title I Distinguished School Award Nominee. This nomination placed our school as one of the top eight exceptionally performing Title I schools in the state of Indiana. Deerfield is currently highlighted on the Indiana Department of Education website: https://www.doe.in.gov/sig/distinguished-schools. Deerfield also exceeds expectations according to federal school accountability ratings. Only five percent of elementary and middle schools in Indiana were able to achieve this rating. Check out the article below from the Muncie Star Press. https://www.thestarpress.com/story/news/local/2020/01/03/report-card-how-eci-schools-fared-federal-ratings/2796698001/ We continue to take great pride in the work of our students and teachers here at Deerfield. Randolph Central Families, Your 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participated in the ILEARN assessments earlier this spring. Since ILEARN is a new test, the final results with proficiency levels and scale scores will not be available for schools until August 15. In accordance with Indiana Code 20-32-5.1-12(d), parents and schools have an opportunity to request a rescore for any open-ended item(s) to which students responded on the ILEARN assessment. Important Information about the ILEARN Rescore Request Process: • The ILEARN Rescore Request window will be open in mid-July (July 15 – 31). Requests submitted outside of this window will not be processed. • Parents or guardians who wish to view students’ response images and scoring rubrics must visit the school in which their child is officially enrolled. There will not be a separate online portal for parents to access this information. • Together, we will be able to view an image of your student’s response to each open-ended item, sample student responses for each score point, and the scoring rubric to help decide whether to request a rescore for that item. • I will submit any rescore request(s) on your behalf in the online platform. • It is extremely important to understand that requesting a rescore CAN result in your child’s score being lowered, meaning we could unintentionally move your child from a passing score to a failing score through this process. • Once a rescore request is submitted, the request and/or score change cannot be reversed. • A rescore request can only be requested one time for an item. Multiple requests to rescore the same item for a student are not permissible. • All items, responses, and scoring rubrics are secure materials and must not be discussed, shared, distributed, or duplicated. • Final results released on August 15 will reflect any properly submitted requested rescores. Parents or guardians who choose to request a rescore for their child’s ILEARN assessment, must contact our school office to do so no later than July 31, 2019. I will be able to help you view your child’s response images and scoring rubrics and request a rescore for each item. You’re also welcome to contact me with any questions you have regarding requesting a rescore for an ILEARN assessment. Sincerely, Laura Miller, Principal

This is a CORRECTION to information that was posted yesterday in regard to kindergarten entrance dates. According to updated information we received today, we want to make this clarification. 1. To enroll in kindergarten a student still must be at least 5 years old on August 1 of the year of enrollment. 2. Indiana schools may adopt a procedure that allows parents of a student who turns 5 after August 1 to appeal to the schools for enrollment in kindergarten. We apologize for the confusion. If your child will be 5 between August 1 and September 1, and you think he or she is ready for kindergarten, contact our office for further details.
Attention Parents of Incoming Kindergarten Students: The statewide date for kindergarten entrance has changed. Any child who turns 5 by September 1, 2019, can enroll in Kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year at Deerfield Elementary School. Please visit our office or contact us by phone at 765-595-0144 extension 1300 for information about how to register your child for kindergarten.
We are in need of volunteers (moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, or big brothers or sisters) to make field day a success! The kids LOVE Field Day. However, there are a lot of stations and a lot of groups that rotate through the stations. Therefore, we need a lot of volunteers. Volunteers will need to plan to arrive around 9:30 a.m. on May 17. Call the office at 765-595-0144, option 3 if you can help.
